Interventional Radiology
At Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, our Interventional Radiology department
utilizes many non-surgical, minimally invasive treatments as an alternative
to open surgical procedures for a variety of conditions. Interventional radiology
procedures are generally easier for the patient because they involve small incisions,
minimal pain, and shorter recovery times.
Interventional radiologists use their expertise in reading X-rays, CT scans,
ultrasound, and other medical imaging modalities to guide small instruments
such as catheters tubes through the blood vessels or other pathways. Diseases
are treated through the skin versus through open surgery.
Examples of conventional interventional radiology procedures include vertebroblasty,
kyphoplasty, radio frequency ablation of tumors, angiography, balloon angioplasty
and stenting to open clogged blood vessels, hepatic chemoembolization of liver
tumors, uterine fibroid embolization, spinal pain injections, and needle biopsy,
to name a few.
